Dictation is only half the exam
A stenographer skill test has two halves: taking dictation in shorthand, then transcribing your shorthand notes on a computer within a strict time limit. Candidates who can write shorthand fast enough still fail when their typing cannot keep pace with the transcription clock — which is why dedicated transcription typing practice matters as much as shorthand drills.
What is KDPH?
Many notifications — especially in Rajasthan — score typing in key depressions per hour (KDPH) rather than words per minute. Every key you press counts, including shift keys and matras in Hindi, so KDPH rewards clean, continuous typing. As a rough guide, 8000 KDPH corresponds to about 25–27 WPM depending on the text.
Rajasthan High Court requirements
Rajasthan High Court LDC recruitment has specified an efficiency test of 8000 key depressions per hour typed in the Kruti Dev 010 font. Steno-grade posts add a shorthand dictation stage before the typed transcription, and dictation/transcription speeds vary by notification — always verify the current official notification for your post before committing to a preparation target.
Krutidev or Mangal? Check your notification
Rajasthan exams have traditionally used the legacy Kruti Dev 010 (Remington) font, while some other High Courts and boards require Mangal Unicode with the Inscript or Remington-Gail layout. The keyboard positions are completely different between these, so confirm the font and layout your notification specifies before you start building muscle memory.
