Hindi Keyboard Layouts — Common Questions

How many Hindi keyboard layouts are there for government exams?

Four are commonly required: Kruti Dev 010 and DevLys 010 (legacy fonts on the Remington keyboard, and interchangeable with each other), plus Mangal Unicode on two keyboards — Inscript (IS 13194) and Remington/GAIL. Which one you need depends entirely on your exam notification.

Which Hindi keyboard layout should I learn?

Learn the one your target exam specifies. CPCT and most Rajasthan/MP state exams use Kruti Dev (or the interchangeable DevLys); SSC and UP government exams use Mangal Inscript; GAIL and some others use Mangal Remington/GAIL. Open each layout page to see its key chart and exam list.

What is the difference between a legacy font and Unicode?

Legacy fonts like Kruti Dev/DevLys store text as ASCII that only looks like Hindi when the specific font is applied — copy it elsewhere and it breaks. Unicode (Mangal) stores real Devanagari that copies, searches and displays correctly everywhere. Modern central exams increasingly use Unicode.

Are Kruti Dev and DevLys really the same keyboard?

Yes — Kruti Dev 010 and DevLys 010 share the identical Remington-based key layout, so the same keystrokes produce the same characters. They differ only in a few font glyphs and are interchangeable in exams.
