About the CPCT typing test
The CPCT (Computer Proficiency Certification Test) is a Madhya Pradesh state government certification that tests Hindi typing alongside basic computer skills. The Hindi typing component requires candidates to type in Krutidev 010 — a legacy font-based layout where Hindi characters appear when you press specific English keys. A CPCT score is mandatory or preferred for many MP government jobs, making it one of the most important state-level typing certifications in central India.

Krutidev uses visual order, not phonetic order
In Krutidev, characters are typed in the order they appear on screen — not in the order you hear them. The most confusing consequence: the short-i matra (ि, the F key) must be typed BEFORE the consonant it sits next to, even though it appears to its right. For example, "कि" (ki) is typed as F then D — not D then F. This visual-order rule catches most beginners and takes deliberate practice to internalise.
How to prepare
Proven tactics from students who cleared the CPCT typing test.
Memorise the home row first
A (anusvara ं), S (e-matra े), D (क), F (ि-matra), G (ह), H (ी-matra), J (र), K (ा-matra), L (स), ; (य) — these 10 keys cover the most common Hindi characters. Master them before touching the other rows.
Drill the i-matra rule every day
Type words like "कि", "मिल", "दिन" using F before D, E, N. This single habit — typing the matra before the consonant — is the biggest source of errors for CPCT aspirants.
Learn conjuncts as sequences
Common conjuncts like ख ([ + K), घ (? + K), ध (/ + K) are typed as two-key sequences. Practise them as a pair, not as individual keys.
Aim for 30 WPM in practice to clear 25 comfortably
Exam conditions (nervousness, unfamiliar passage) typically drop your speed by 10–15%. If you practise at 30 WPM consistently, you will comfortably clear the 25 WPM cutoff on test day.
Keep accuracy above 90% in practice
The CPCT cutoff is 85% accuracy. Practising at 90% gives you a safety buffer for exam-day nerves. Track accuracy, not just speed, in every session.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Typing the short-i matra (ि) AFTER the consonant instead of before it — the single most common CPCT error.
- Treating Krutidev like a phonetic layout and expecting to find characters by sound rather than visual position.
- Neglecting the two-key sequences for common consonants (ख, घ, ध, भ, श, ष, ण) which are needed in almost every passage.
- Practising only words in isolation, not full 200–300 word passages with all character types.
- Ignoring accuracy and only chasing WPM — a 14% error rate disqualifies you regardless of speed.
CPCT typing test — frequently asked questions
What is the CPCT Hindi typing cutoff?
Candidates must achieve at least 25 net words per minute (approximately 7,500 key depressions per hour) with a minimum accuracy of 85%. Both conditions must be met simultaneously.
Which font does CPCT use for Hindi typing?
CPCT uses Krutidev 010 — a legacy Hindi font where Devanagari characters are mapped to standard QWERTY keyboard keys. This is different from Unicode-based fonts like Mangal.
How long is the CPCT typing test?
The Hindi typing component is 15 minutes. You must type a given Hindi passage as accurately and quickly as possible within this window.
Is backspace allowed in the CPCT typing test?
Yes, backspace is fully allowed in CPCT. Errors reduce your net WPM score, so correct mistakes quickly — but do not let fixing minor errors slow down your overall pace.
Can I use the same Krutidev practice for SSC CHSL Hindi typing?
Yes. SSC CHSL Hindi typing also uses Krutidev 010 with a similar 30 WPM cutoff, so CPCT practice transfers directly. The main difference is the conducting body and the error measurement method.
