About the SSC CGL typing test
The SSC CGL Data Entry Skill Test (DEST) is the typing stage for Combined Graduate Level posts such as Tax Assistant, Sub-Inspector (CBI), and Junior Statistical Investigator. Unlike a plain typing speed test, DEST is conducted in a word-processor environment where paragraph formatting and tab spacing count. The result is based on both your speed and the percentage of text you typed incorrectly — categories get different error tolerances.

DEST is not a plain speed test
Most typing practice tools simulate a simple left-to-right test. The SSC CGL DEST is administered in a word processor where you must reproduce paragraph breaks and tab indents. Errors are counted as a percentage of the total passage text — this means a long passage with a few scattered mistakes can still fail you if the percentage crosses your category's limit. Practise with full office-style passages that include numbers, punctuation, and paragraph formatting.
How to prepare
Proven tactics from students who cleared the SSC CGL typing test.
Anchor your hands on the home row
Every stray glance at the keyboard costs you time and breaks your rhythm. Lock your fingers on ASDF–JKL; from day one and reach only when needed.
Practise full passages, not random words
DEST rewards consistent paragraph-length rhythm, not bursts of speed. Use passages of 300–500 words in a word processor to match real exam conditions.
Track your error percentage, not just WPM
You can reach 40 WPM and still fail if your error rate crosses 20%. Monitor both metrics every session and drill the specific character pairs where you make mistakes.
Build up to full 15-minute sessions
Stamina matters. Short sprints build speed; 15-minute practice sets build the concentration and wrist endurance you need on exam day.
Drill numbers and punctuation separately
Passages for DEST often include years, figures, and punctuation (commas, colons, dashes). These break most students' rhythm — include a number-row drill every week.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Ignoring paragraph formatting — the word processor expects you to reproduce breaks and indentation, not just text.
- Focusing only on speed and not tracking the error percentage until it is too late to correct.
- Practising on plain speed-test websites that do not simulate a word-processor environment.
- Not drilling numbers and punctuation, which make up a noticeable share of DEST passages.
- Skipping backspace use — unlike RRB exams, DEST allows correction, so fix visible errors as you type.
SSC CGL typing test — frequently asked questions
What is the SSC CGL DEST typing test?
DEST stands for Data Entry Skill Test. It is the typing qualifying stage for certain SSC CGL posts where candidates reproduce an English passage in a word processor at a minimum of 35 WPM, within their category's error limit.
Is backspace allowed in the SSC CGL typing test?
Yes. The SSC CGL DEST allows full use of backspace. However, because errors are counted as a percentage of the passage, you should fix mistakes immediately rather than letting them accumulate.
How is the error percentage calculated in DEST?
The number of incorrectly typed words is divided by the total words in the passage to get the error percentage. If your error percentage exceeds your category's limit (20% for General, 25% for OBC/EWS, 30% for SC/ST), you are disqualified even if your speed meets the cutoff.
Which SSC CGL posts require the typing test?
DEST is required for posts such as Tax Assistant (CBDT/CBIC), Sub-Inspector (CBI), and Junior Statistical Investigator (JSI). Posts that do not require data entry skills are not subject to the DEST stage.
How many weeks does it take to prepare for SSC CGL typing?
Most students who start at around 20 WPM can reach 35 WPM with consistent daily practice in 4–8 weeks. The key is full-passage practice in a word-processor environment, not just speed drills.
